What is the Directional Movement Index?
The DMI was created by legendary analyst J. Welles Wilder, and it answers one of the most important questions in trading: who's winning right now — the buyers or the sellers? It does this by comparing upward price moves against downward price moves over a 14-period window. When buyers are pushing harder, the market is likely heading up. When sellers have the upper hand, the market is heading down. It's one of the most widely used indicators in the world, from stocks all the way to crypto.
How Does It Work?
The bot calculates the Positive Directional Movement (+DM) and Negative Directional Movement (-DM) over 14 periods. When +DM is stronger than -DM, buyers are winning and the bot signals Buy. When -DM takes over, sellers dominate and the bot signals Sell. The 14-period window strikes a solid balance between responsiveness and filtering out short-term noise.
Using It in BitThor
Select Directional Movement Index from the indicator list in your bot config. DMI is a reliable, battle-tested indicator that works as either a primary or secondary signal. It pairs especially well with ADX, which measures how strong the trend actually is. Together, DMI and ADX give you both direction and confidence level — a powerful combo.
Tips for Beginners
-
DMI is one of the most trusted indicators in trading — a rock-solid foundation for any bot strategy.
-
Combine DMI with ADX for the full picture: DMI tells you which way the market is heading, ADX tells you how strongly.
-
In choppy, sideways markets DMI signals can flip back and forth. Use extra indicators to filter trades during ranging conditions.
