Why compare EMA and WMA instead of treating them as interchangeable?

EMA and WMA are both built to react faster than a simple moving average, but they do it differently. EMA applies an exponential weighting curve, so each new price matters more than older data in a smooth, decaying way. WMA uses a fixed weighting schedule over the lookback window, which can make recent candles matter even more sharply. In a market that is accelerating, WMA can feel snappier. In a market that is noisy, EMA often looks more balanced because its weighting fades more gradually instead of jumping from one fixed bucket to the next.

How Does It Work?

Run the same bot with EMA and WMA on identical settings and watch how often each indicator flips direction after quick pullbacks. EMA usually handles sustained motion with fewer abrupt reversals, while WMA can surface early turns sooner when the latest candles are doing most of the work. That difference matters when a symbol is volatile: the faster line may help you catch more upside, but it can also raise trade count and reduce clarity if the market keeps faking out.

Using It in BitThor

Use EMA when you want responsiveness without giving the newest candles total control. Use WMA when you want the bot to lean aggressively on the most recent market movement. A practical approach is to simulate both on one trending symbol and one sideways symbol, then compare not only pnl but also how often each indicator forces the bot to change its mind. That side-by-side view tells you more than the label alone.

Tips for Beginners

  • EMA is usually the safer default when you want a responsive but stable moving average.
  • WMA can shine when a symbol is accelerating and the latest candles really do carry more information.
  • If WMA increases trade count sharply without improving SIS or win rate, it is probably overreacting to noise.
