What is MACD?

MACD stands for Moving Average Convergence Divergence. Gerald Appel introduced it as a way to compare a faster moving average with a slower one so traders can see whether momentum is strengthening or fading. In most charts, MACD compares a 12-period EMA with a 26-period EMA, then plots the distance between them. When that gap widens, momentum is picking up. When the gap narrows, momentum is cooling off. The histogram helps visualize that change without forcing you to read the raw numbers first.

How Does It Work?

BitThor calculates MACD by subtracting the 26-period EMA from the 12-period EMA and then calculating a signal line from the MACD values. The bot watches the distance between those two lines. When the histogram grows above the signal line, the market is showing stronger upward momentum. When it moves below the signal line, momentum is weakening or shifting lower. This is descriptive signal analysis, not a guarantee about the next price move.

Using It in BitThor

Select Moving Average Convergence Divergence from the indicator list in your bot config when you want a readable momentum signal. MACD is often paired with RSI because MACD helps describe trend momentum while RSI helps describe whether price has become stretched. For beginner setups, start with simulation mode first so you can see how the two indicators behave together on your chosen symbol.

Tips for Beginners

  • Treat MACD as a momentum lens. It can help explain whether a move is strengthening or fading, but it should not be used as a profit guarantee.
  • Watch for divergence carefully: when price and MACD stop moving in the same direction, it can be a sign to review the setup more closely.
  • Pair MACD with RSI or volume confirmation in simulation first so you can compare multiple signals before enabling live trading.
