What is the RSI of Volume?

The RSI of Volume takes the same RSI formula and turns it loose on trading volume instead of price. While the standard RSI tells you when price has moved too far too fast, the Volume RSI tells you when trading activity itself has become extreme. An overbought Volume RSI means volume has surged dramatically and may not be sustainable. An oversold Volume RSI means the market has gone very quiet. Volume extremes like these often show up just before important price turning points — making this a powerful complement to price-based indicators.

How Does It Work?

The bot calculates RSI on volume data, measuring how quickly trading activity is changing. When the Volume RSI shows oversold conditions (volume declining) and starts to rise, the bot signals Buy — anticipating renewed market interest. When it shows overbought conditions (volume surged) and starts to fall, the bot signals Sell. It gives you a completely different angle on momentum that price indicators alone can't see.

Using It in BitThor

Select Relative Strength Index of Volume from the indicator list in your bot config. Best used as a secondary signal alongside a price-based indicator like RSI or a moving average. Set a moderate Indicator Factor weight so it adds its voice without shouting over the price signal.

Tips for Beginners

  • When Volume RSI diverges from price RSI — say price makes new highs but Volume RSI is falling — the rally may be running on fumes.
  • Use alongside the price-based RSI for a comprehensive view of both price momentum and volume momentum.
  • Extreme Volume RSI readings often mark important turning points. Keep an eye out for those spikes to 90+ or dips to 10 and below.
