What is the Simple Moving Average?
The SMA is the most fundamental building block in technical analysis — and still one of the most useful. It calculates the average closing price over a set number of recent periods. Every time a new price comes in, the oldest one drops off and the newest gets added. The result is a smooth line that cuts through short-term noise and shows you what direction prices are actually heading. When the SMA is rising, the trend is up. When it's falling, the trend is down. Clean, simple, effective.
How Does It Work?
The bot calculates the SMA on closing prices and watches its slope. When the SMA has a positive slope (line rising), it signals Buy. When the slope turns negative (line falling), it signals Sell. The minimum window is 3 periods, but longer windows give you smoother, more reliable signals — at the cost of a little extra delay.
Using It in BitThor
Select Simple Moving Average from the indicator list. The SMA is a brilliant starting point if you're new to trading bots — it's easy to understand and reason about. Adjust the decision rounds to control how many periods go into the calculation. Shorter periods make the SMA snappier but noisier; longer periods are calmer and slower.
Tips for Beginners
-
The SMA is the foundation of technical analysis. If you're just getting started with trading bots, this is the perfect place to begin.
-
Use longer periods (20+) for steady trend following, and shorter periods (5–10) if you want a more active strategy.
-
Pair with RSI to catch reversals within the overall trend — a classic combination that has stood the test of time.
