Why compare VWAP with SMA of Volume?
VWAP and SMA Volume look related because both care about trading activity, but they are focused on different layers of the market. VWAP tells you where price sits relative to the volume-weighted average transaction level. SMA Volume tells you whether participation itself is increasing or fading compared with normal activity. One answers, 'Are we trading above or below the volume-weighted fair zone?' The other answers, 'Is the market actually busy enough to trust this move?' When you compare them, you learn whether location or participation is doing more of the explanatory work.
How Does It Work?
In practice, VWAP can help you judge whether a move is extended away from the average level where volume has accumulated. SMA Volume can help you judge whether there is enough fuel behind the move to keep it going. If VWAP says price is stretched but SMA Volume says activity is fading, the move may be vulnerable. If price is above VWAP and SMA Volume is rising, the trend often has better support. Running them side by side shows whether your symbol needs an execution-context signal, a participation signal, or both.
Using It in BitThor
Choose VWAP when you care most about where current price is trading relative to the session's weighted average level. Choose SMA Volume when you care most about confirming that buyers or sellers are actually showing up. For many onboarding users the best path is to test both, then use the Getting Started troubleshooting guide immediately if the sample simulation stops before you get a clean comparison. The point is to preserve the same test window once the data issue is fixed.
Tips for Beginners
-
VWAP is stronger when you need context about price location and potential deviation from the weighted average level.
-
SMA Volume is stronger when you need confirmation that participation is rising or fading.
-
If both indicators align, you get a much better read on whether the move is both well-located and well-supported.
